Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has apologised for his controversial “Who Naija language help?” remark following widespread criticism on social media.
The former P-Square star had sparked debate after questioning the relevance of Nigerian languages while responding to a follower on X. The statement drew strong reactions, with many accusing him of disrespecting the country’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
Although Peter initially dismissed the criticism and challenged his detractors, he later reversed his position and issued a public apology on Wednesday.
In a statement shared on X, the singer said he accepted full responsibility for his words and expressed regret to anyone offended by the comment.
Peter clarified that his statement was not an attack on any specific ethnic group or language, stressing that he never mentioned the Igbo language or culture.
According to him, his reference to “Naija language” was intended to describe Nigeria’s many indigenous languages collectively, but some people interpreted it as a direct criticism of the Igbo language.
He maintained that he has no hatred for Nigerian languages or cultural heritage, adding that the meaning of his statement had been misconstrued during the online debate.
The apology comes after days of intense criticism from social media users and public figures, making the comment one of the most talked-about entertainment controversies of the week.
