Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has explained that his comments during a meeting with members of the Igbo community in the state were taken out of context and did not reflect the full message of his remarks.
Mutfwang said his apology over the atrocities of the Nigerian Civil War was meant to recognise the painful history of the period while appreciating the resilience, enterprise and contributions of the Igbo community to the development of Plateau State.
In a statement signed by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Gyang Bere, the governor said he never intended to downplay the suffering of any ethnic group or disregard the realities of the Civil War.
He said the experiences and scars of the conflict remain part of Nigeria’s history and must be remembered with empathy, honesty and sensitivity.
Mutfwang also highlighted Plateau State’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence among people from different backgrounds, saying successive administrations have continued to promote an environment where Nigerians from all regions can live, work, worship and invest freely.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening unity and preserving the culture of partnership among the diverse communities that make up the state.
