Nigeria produced its best-ever performance at the 15th African Archery Championships in Oran, Algeria, finishing the tournament with seven medals, including one gold, five silver and one bronze.
The historic moment came in the barebow women’s team event, where Faith Adekogbe, Mandu Eteidung and Precious Fanny-Amun defeated hosts Algeria 5-3 to secure Nigeria’s first-ever team gold medal at the continental championship.
Adekogbe emerged as Nigeria’s top performer, winning three medals during the competition. After reaching the individual final as the top seed, she defeated Algeria’s Malia Ait Messaoudene 6-4 in the quarter-final and overcame teammate Precious Fanny-Amun by the same score in the semi-final before settling for silver after losing to Algeria’s Marwa Rahmoun in the final.
She also claimed another silver medal in the barebow mixed team event alongside Abubakar Usman, who finished the championship with two silver medals.
Nigeria completed a strong showing in the barebow category as the men’s team of Abdul Rahman Obasa, Abdulbasit Sanni and Usman also earned silver after reaching the final against Algeria.
The country added three more medals in the compound events, with the men’s team of Aliyu Abubakar, Seun Emmanuel Oyeleke and Damilola Bartholomew Sholademi taking silver after defeating Algeria in the semi-final before losing to Mauritius in the final.
The compound mixed team of Yvonne Hareke Evans-Uhegbu and Oyeleke also secured silver after falling narrowly to Namibia in the final.
