Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s position as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Ekiti State governorship election has received further legal backing following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of a challenge against his candidacy.
The APC in Ekiti State welcomed the judgment, describing it as a confirmation of the party’s internal democratic process and the rule of law. In a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Segun Dipe, the party said the verdict had brought an end to all legal issues surrounding Oyebanji’s emergence as the APC candidate.
The case was filed by APC governorship aspirant Abimbola Olawunmi, who challenged the outcome of the party’s primary election that produced Oyebanji as its candidate. The matter had previously been decided in favour of Oyebanji by both the High Court and the Court of Appeal before the Supreme Court, in a unanimous judgment on Friday, dismissed Olawunmi’s appeal.
Reacting to the ruling, the APC congratulated Governor Oyebanji, praising his approach throughout the legal battle and his commitment to governance despite the uncertainty surrounding the case. The party said the governor remained focused on delivering development, promoting unity and ensuring inclusiveness among the people of Ekiti State.
It urged party members and stakeholders to view the judgment as an opportunity to strengthen unity and support the governor’s administration. The APC also commended the judiciary for upholding justice and democracy, while appreciating President Bola Tinubu and the party’s National Working Committee for their support.
The party said the Supreme Court’s decision further strengthens Oyebanji’s mandate and allows him to continue pursuing his agenda for shared prosperity in Ekiti State.
