Media personality and entrepreneur Toke Makinwa has advised young adults not to rush into marriage in their 20s, arguing that the period is better spent understanding oneself before making lifelong commitments.
Speaking on an episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, featuring reality TV star Tacha, the 41-year-old said many people enter marriage before fully discovering who they are.
According to Makinwa, there is no reason to feel pressured into marrying at a young age.
“You have absolutely no business getting married in your 20s. You honestly don’t even know yourself. Ask those who did if they will be very honest with you,” she said.
The media personality also reflected on her own life, describing her 30s as the most difficult decade despite the professional success she achieved during that period.
“There’s no point in rushing. It’s fantastic that we’re ageing with grace. I don’t want to go back to my 30s; they were the worst! I did not like my 30s,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Makinwa said the decade played a crucial role in shaping her career and financial independence.
“The only thing I’m grateful for in my 30s was that I became an established person in terms of business and my career; I grew financially, and I got to understand what I would want in my 40s,” she added.
She also opened up about her romantic life, revealing that she spent most of her 20s in a single long-term relationship, which she believes limited her experiences during that stage of life.
“I spent my 20s with one person. I had one guy that gave me all the experience. I wish I had options. I’m not saying I wasn’t in relationships.
“I was locked into one relationship in my 20s, and in my 30s I felt free. I felt like love wasn’t exactly kind to me in my 30s, so I don’t want to go back there. I’m happy I didn’t have a child in my 30s,” she said.
Makinwa’s comments have since sparked conversations online, with many weighing in on the timing of marriage, personal development, and the evolving expectations surrounding relationships and adulthood.
