President Bola Tinubu’s plan to strengthen Nigeria’s military has received the backing of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, following his approval of four additional Nigerian Army divisions and the recruitment of 28,000 new personnel.
In a statement signed by its Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the forum described the creation of the four divisions as the largest single expansion of the Nigerian Army in modern history.
The governors said the move demonstrates the President’s commitment to improving national security and protecting lives and property across the country.
They also welcomed the approval to recruit 28,000 additional soldiers and acquire more military equipment, saying the measures would enhance ongoing operations against terrorism, banditry and other security threats.
The forum expressed confidence that the increased manpower and improved military assets would strengthen the country’s counterterrorism efforts and boost the Army’s operational effectiveness.
The governors reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Federal Government on security and other national development priorities.
They also urged Nigerians to continue assisting security agencies with credible and timely intelligence to improve safety across the country.
Under the new structure, new divisional headquarters will be established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin City, with implementation scheduled to take place in phases between September and December 2026.
