Barely two weeks since the last government-facilitated repatriation flight landed in Nairobi, bringing home the final group of more than 400 Kenyans evacuated from South Africa’s xenophobic violence, many of the returnees say coming home has not brought an end to their ordeal.
They left behind homes, businesses, livelihoods and, for some, even their own children. Now, they say, the struggle to rebuild has been made even harder by missing documents, untreated trauma and the lack of financial support to start over.
