Three people were injured after a passenger bus veered off the road and crashed into a bridge at Opuyo trading centre in Soroti city in the early hours of Sunday.
The Kakise bus, registration number UAS 159P, was travelling from Soroti to Kampala when the crash occurred at about midnight. According to eyewitness Isaac Olinga, the accident happened as residents had gathered nearby to watch a football match.
“We were here at night watching a World Cup football game when we saw a group involved in a fight. As the altercation intensified, one of the boys tried to cross the road, only to collide with the Kakise bus,” Olinga said.
Olinga said the driver swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the pedestrian but lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the bridge.
“The accident happened in front of many people here. We may not blame the driver; he was trying to avoid hitting a man who was being chased and attempted to cross the road,” Olinga added.
The driver, identified as Alfred Ekongo, and two other people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Police towed the wreckage to Soroti Central Police Station as investigations into the cause of the crash got underway.
