Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has criticised the lyrical direction of some of the country’s biggest music stars, claiming that wealth and fame have diminished the substance of their music.
In a video shared online, the street-pop artiste alleged that Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy and Olamide have become disconnected from the realities of everyday people.
According to Portable, the success enjoyed by the four musicians has influenced the themes of their songs, which he claimed now focus largely on women, luxury and extravagant lifestyles.
He argued that contemporary music should do more than entertain, adding that artists have a responsibility to inspire listeners and communicate meaningful messages.
Portable urged his colleagues to produce more conscious and gospel-inspired songs, saying music should motivate people rather than celebrate material wealth alone.
The singer also warned that financial success should not lead artists to believe they are beyond life’s challenges, stressing that money is not the ultimate measure of success.
He claimed that many recent songs by the artistes no longer contain motivational or educational messages, calling on them to rethink their creative direction.
Portable’s remarks add to a series of outspoken comments he has made about the Nigerian music industry and some of its leading figures.
