Senegalese-American singer Akon has challenged common perceptions about wealth in the music industry, stating that many musicians are not as financially successful as they appear.
The award-winning artiste made the remarks in a recent interview with Hip Hop Eye, where he addressed the contrast between public perception of celebrity lifestyles and the financial realities behind the scenes.
According to Akon, the flashy lifestyles often displayed by artists on social media and in music videos do not accurately reflect their financial situation. He argued that while the music industry is profitable, the bulk of the earnings often goes to executives and professionals working behind the scenes.
“In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous. If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist,” he said.
Akon added that individuals working in other areas of the industry, such as producers, songwriters, managers, agents, and lawyers, often make more sustainable income than performing artists themselves.
He encouraged aspiring creatives to consider roles beyond performing, noting that the wider entertainment ecosystem offers multiple lucrative career paths outside being a recording artiste.
His comments have sparked discussions online about revenue distribution in the music business and the financial realities faced by even successful performers.
