Equity Bank Uganda has commissioned 100 scholars into the fifth cohort of its flagship Equity Leaders Program (ELP), while simultaneously celebrating the graduation of 81 students from the program’s maiden 2022 cohort, a milestone that underscores the institution’s growing footprint in Uganda’s higher education landscape.
The newly commissioned scholars join 412 previously admitted students, bringing the total number of ELP graduates since the program’s inception to 512. The scholars were selected on the basis of outstanding performance in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education examinations.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Equity Bank Uganda managing director Gift Shoko emphasised the program’s pivotal role in producing future leaders equipped to contribute to national development.
“Through the Equity Leaders Program, we are not only supporting academic excellence but also nurturing leaders who will drive innovation, integrity, and sustainable growth for Uganda,” he said.
He noted that ELP provides scholars with mentorship, leadership training, and exposure to global opportunities, transforming them into change-makers within their communities.
Shoko also underscored the importance of intentional growth, urging scholars to actively shape their futures deliberate choices and discipline as they transition into professional life.
A programme built for holistic leadership
Dr Joanne Korir, the director of operations at Equity Group Foundation, described the program’s fifth year in Uganda as a moment of pride.
She highlighted that ELP goes beyond financial support, equipping young Ugandans with critical thinking, business acumen, leadership, and life skills, attributes she said are essential for the country’s socio-economic transformation.

Catherine Psomgen, the director of public sector and social investment, echoed these sentiments, noting that the program exposes students to leadership training, mentorship, and practical experience that prepares them for life beyond school.
She added that scholars receive support for global university applications and career development, opening pathways that may otherwise be inaccessible. As part of the program, scholars undergo a three-to-six-month paid internship with Equity bank, receiving a monthly stipend and hands-on experience across various departments.
After the internship, mentorship and coaching continue throughout their university education. A comprehensive two-month college counselling program guides scholars on essay writing, university selection, and exam preparation.
Former scholars of ELP have secured fully funded scholarships to prestigious international institutions including Harvard University, New York University, the University of Waterloo, and institutions in China, India, Russia, and Germany.
Scholars speak: ‘Life-changing’ graduating scholar
Victor Nuwaga described the program as transformative.
“Beyond financial support, it gave me mentorship, confidence and a network of peers who inspire me every day. I am proud to be part of a community that is committed to giving back and shaping Uganda’s future,” he said.

Fellow scholar Christabel Nabukenya Babirye reflected on the importance of inclusion, stressing that access to financial systems and mentorship can unlock the potential of young people regardless of background.
“Every student in this room has potential,” she told peers, urging them to use their opportunities to create impact beyond themselves.
Government and board support
Guest of honour Dr Patrick Muinda, the commissioner for Library, E-Learning and Information Technology, commended Equity bank for its commitment to empowering the next generation and fostering innovation across diverse sectors.
He urged scholars to root their leadership in service and responsibility, using their education to create meaningful impact in their communities. Equity Group Foundation Board Director Sam Bwaya challenged the newly commissioned scholars to uphold excellence, discipline, and integrity, reminding them that they now serve as ambassadors of the program’s values.
Delivering a keynote on behalf of Equity Group CEO Dr James Mwangi, non-executive board director Henry Rugaamba highlighted the transformative power of opportunity, noting: “Excellence is not determined by geography, background, or circumstance — it exists in every community.”
The Equity Leaders Program is a rigorous mentorship and leadership development initiative run by Equity Group Foundation across Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
