Meta and TikTok have agreed to strengthen efforts to counter harmful disinformation linked to the recent migrant rush into Ceuta, according to the European Union.
The European Commission said the platforms activated crisis protocols and established a voluntary mechanism to work more closely with local fact-checkers and Europol during periods of heightened tension.
The move followed reports that online rumours, including claims that the Ceuta border was open, helped fuel the mass crossing of migrants from Morocco into the Spanish territory.
Meta said it was monitoring the situation and removing content that violates its policies, including material facilitating human smuggling. TikTok also said it was enforcing its rules against content promoting illegal border crossings.
The EU warned that it could take further action if the voluntary measures prove insufficient, while TikTok said it was working with fact-checking organisations in Spain and Morocco to monitor rapidly developing content.
