A Sunday service at an Assemblies of God church in Ughelli, Delta State, was disrupted following a violent incident involving uniformed individuals who allegedly attacked a senior pastor and his wife inside the sanctuary, prompting swift internal and external investigations by church authorities.
The incident occurred at the Otovwodo branch under Ughelli District in Ughelli, Delta State, where a group of individuals wearing Royal Rangers uniforms reportedly stormed the church during worship. The disruption led to panic among congregants, while the cause of the confrontation is still under review by both district and national church leadership.
According to an official statement from the Ughelli District of the Assemblies of God Nigeria, the matter is currently under internal investigation, with leadership describing the process as being handled with “wisdom, discretion, and maturity.”
The district also confirmed that the pastor and his family have received medical attention following the incident, stating that appropriate care has been provided after the attack.
“We are pleased to inform the public that the Pastor and his family have received appropriate medical attention following the incident, and necessary care has been duly provided.”
Church authorities further described the situation as a family matter, noting that both spiritual and administrative structures within the church are actively engaged in resolving the issue peacefully.
They urged the public and members of the Christian community to avoid speculation or premature conclusions, stressing the importance of allowing due process to take its course.
“We respectfully urge members of the body of Christ and the general public to refrain from speculation or drawing premature conclusions based on incomplete information.”
The district reiterated its commitment to maintaining order, godliness, and the proclamation of the gospel of peace, while assuring that a fair and peaceful resolution is being pursued.
Investigations are ongoing as church leadership and relevant authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
