Fresh political calculations may be unfolding within the opposition bloc as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) zones its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria.
The decision was announced on Saturday during the party’s national convention held at the Los Angeles Event Centre, Ahmadu Bello Way, Abuja.
The party said the South would retain the presidency for a single four-year term before the ticket rotates to Northern Nigeria in 2031.
According to the resolution adopted at the convention, the arrangement is anchored on the principles of power sharing and rotational leadership between the northern and southern parts of the country.
The party declared that its 2027 presidential ticket had officially been zoned to Southern Nigeria for a single term ending in 2031.
NDC further stated that the presidential ticket would automatically rotate to the North after the expiration of the four-year tenure.
The development comes shortly after former Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, said the party had yet to zone its presidential ticket to any region.
Kwankwaso had also stated that consultations were ongoing on whether he would emerge as the party’s presidential candidate or become running mate to former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 elections.
