FCT Minister says he is focused on Tinubu’s re-election and does not need a campaign title to deliver Rivers, Abuja……
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports that he is lobbying to become Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 election.
Wike, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, described the reports as false, saying he had never discussed securing either the leadership or membership of the proposed campaign council with anyone.
The denial followed reports suggesting that Wike was among senior APC figures and government officials being considered for the position of Director-General of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
The FCT Minister, however, said his commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election remained firm and that he did not require a formal position within the campaign structure to contribute to the President’s electoral success.
According to him, his priority would be to ensure strong support for Tinubu in both Rivers State and the FCT.
“I do not need to be the DG or even member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said.
Explaining his current activities, the minister said he was outside the country taking a break after an extensive period of official engagements in the FCT.
Wike said he had spent more than 30 days commissioning completed projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing projects, particularly those scheduled for completion and commissioning in December and January.
“I am outside Nigeria, resting and relaxing after spending over 30 days, commissioning projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing ones, especially those scheduled for commissioning in December and January, next year,” he said.
He said his attention would return to the administration of the FCT when he gets back, with a continued focus on implementing the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“When I return, our focus will be the continuous delivery of our mandate in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to further enhance his electoral fortune in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
Wike’s comments effectively seek to draw a line between his political support for Tinubu and the reported scramble for positions within the President’s campaign structure.
While the minister has openly backed Tinubu’s re-election bid, he said his support should not be interpreted as an attempt to secure a campaign appointment.
His position also suggests that he intends to rely on his political influence and administrative responsibilities rather than a formal campaign title to support the President’s re-election effort.
The minister’s clarification comes as political calculations around the 2027 presidential election begin to intensify, with attention increasingly turning to the structure and leadership of the APC’s campaign machinery.
For now, Wike says he remains focused on governance in the FCT and on helping Tinubu secure strong electoral support in Rivers State and Abuja, rather than pursuing a position within the President’s campaign council.
