Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has opened up about why she has repeatedly portrayed witches, wicked women and other antagonistic characters throughout her acting career.
Ozokwor described her recurring roles as more than a career niche, saying she believes they were given to her by God.
The actress made the disclosure during a livestreamed interview with content creator Carter Efe, where she addressed the public’s curiosity about her frequent appearances as villains in Nollywood films.
“I think God gave me that niche,” Ozokwor said.
The actress, however, stressed that her personal values are far removed from the characters she portrays on screen.
“I hate every ill because I don’t like injustice, war, and rancour. When you give me those roles, I try to bring everything into them,” she explained.
According to Ozokwor, her approach to playing antagonists is deliberate, with her performances designed to communicate the consequences of destructive behaviour.
She said actors taking on such roles should understand the eventual consequences of the actions portrayed in the story.
“If you are taking part in any of them, you have to be careful and know the end thereof, for the end justifies the means. Know what will happen to you if you live a terrible life, and know what you will gain if you are a good person,” she said.
Ozokwor’s explanation places her famous villainous characters within what she sees as a broader purpose of storytelling — using dramatic portrayals of wrongdoing to warn audiences about the consequences of their choices.
The actress remains one of Nollywood’s recognisable veterans, having built a reputation over the years for portraying strong and memorable characters, particularly antagonistic roles.
