The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is severely hampering efforts to contain a worsening Ebola outbreak.
WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the situation in eastern DRC represents a “catastrophic collision of disease and conflict”, adding that the Ebola outbreak in Ituri province is outpacing response efforts.
So far, the WHO has recorded at least 10 confirmed Ebola deaths and about 220 suspected deaths since mid-May. The global health body also reports around 900 suspected cases since the outbreak was declared on May 15, warning that the actual spread is likely much higher.
Meanwhile, Uganda has announced the temporary closure of its border with the DRC as part of efforts to prevent cross-border transmission.
The Ugandan Health Ministry said only authorised response teams, humanitarian workers, and approved cargo movements will be allowed to cross, subject to strict health screening.
It added that anyone entering Uganda from the DRC must undergo mandatory 21-day self-isolation, while schools in border districts will remain open.
