Croatia booked their place in the World Cup last 32 as Nikola Vlasic’s late header sealed a 2-1 victory over already-qualified Ghana in Philadelphia.
Needing only to avoid defeat to guarantee progression, Zlatko Dalic’s side secured second place in Group L behind England after Vlasic nodded home Luka Modric’s corner seven minutes from time. The result also ended Scotland’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
Croatia had deservedly taken the lead in the first half through Petar Sucic, who collected Mateo Kovacic’s pass before drilling a low shot into the bottom corner after 31 minutes.
Ghana improved significantly after the break and drew level in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen headed in Ernest Nuamah’s cross. The goal was awarded following a lengthy VAR review that confirmed Kwasi Sibo, who was in an offside position, had not interfered with play.
The Black Stars appeared the more likely winners late on, but Benjamin Asare produced an excellent save to deny Mario Pasalic before Croatia struck the decisive blow. Modric’s corner found Vlasic, whose header secured Croatia’s second win of the group stage.
Ghana, despite the defeat, progressed to the knockout rounds as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, while Croatia advanced as Group L runners-up.
