UNICEF has warned healthcare workers in Enugu State against diverting nutrition supplements meant for children, stressing that the products must be distributed free of charge to beneficiaries.
The warning was issued by UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Enugu, Juliet Chiluwe, during the close of a three-day training for frontline health workers from the state’s 17 local government areas.
Chiluwe said surveys showed high levels of child stunting in Enugu and urged health workers to ensure the supplements reach eligible children. She added that UNICEF would monitor health facilities to prevent diversion.
A representative of the Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Chinelo Nnadi, encouraged health workers to apply the knowledge gained from the training and urged parents to take advantage of the programme.
The supplements, targeted at children aged six to 23 months, are designed to improve nutrition, strengthen immunity and support healthy growth.
