Britain has insisted that sovereignty over the Falkland Islands rests firmly with the UK, after an internal Pentagon email suggested reviewing Washington’s stance.
The message outlined options to reconsider US diplomatic support for certain European held territories, including the Falklands.
“We could not be clearer about the UK’s position,” the spokesperson said, stressing that the islands’ right to self-determination remains paramount and unchanged across successive US administrations.
The internal memo was linked to broader discussions about responses to allied positions on the Iran conflict, proposing measures against NATO partners seen as not fully supporting US operations.
The dispute over the islands dates back to the Falklands War, when Argentina attempted to seize the territory before surrendering after a brief but deadly conflict.
Asked whether the move was intended to pressure Britain over its Iran stance, the spokesperson said the prime minister would continue to act in the UK’s national interest, unaffected by external pressure.
