Efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran have taken a new turn, with President, Donald Trump, extending the existing ceasefire.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the move followed appeals from Pakistan’s leadership, including Field Marshal, Asim Munir and Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who urged Washington to delay further military action to allow diplomatic efforts to continue.
“Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, we have been asked to hold our attack on the country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal”, Trump stated.
The ceasefire, which was set to expire within hours, will now remain in effect until Iran submits a proposal and discussions are concluded, according to the U.S. president.
However, Trump maintained that military pressure would not be eased, saying he had directed U.S. forces to continue a blockade while remaining on standby.
“We will continue the blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able”, he said.
The extension marks a shift from his earlier position, where he warned that military action could resume if no progress was made before the deadline.
The development is expected to open a limited window for renewed diplomatic engagement, as global stakeholders step up efforts to prevent further escalation in the region.
