Former Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong has singled out Mbekezile Mbokazi as South Africa’s most impressive performer in their 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Chicago Fire FC defender delivered a solid display at the heart of the Bafana Bafana defence, helping to contain Canada for long spells before Stephen Eustáquio’s late strike sealed the win and a place in the Round of 16 for the hosts.
Providing analysis on SuperSport, Ekong praised the young centre-back for his standout contribution on the night.
“It speaks volumes that Mbokazi [Mbekezile] was the best player on the South African team. I believe Okon also had considerable possession of the ball,” Ekong stated.
He also observed that South Africa created opportunities in the final 30 minutes after pushing forward, but suggested their cautious approach in waiting for extra time proved costly.
“In the second half, there were chances in the last half hour as they became more attack-oriented.
“They were waiting to see what would transpire in extra time, and I think that decision cost them today,” he added.
