President Bola Tinubu has praised Team Nigeria for its performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, following the country’s impressive 24-medal finish.
Nigeria secured 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals at the Games, a feat the President said demonstrated the athletes’ resilience, discipline, and commitment to excellence.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the athletes represented Nigeria with honour and pride, describing their achievements as a product of hard work and perseverance.
“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the Games possible,” the President said.
Tinubu also commended the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their contributions to sports development, while reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving training facilities, strengthening sporting institutions, and creating more opportunities for Nigerian athletes.
He urged Team Nigeria members to remain focused and continue pursuing excellence on the global stage.
Nigeria’s 24-medal haul at Glasgow 2026 ranks among its notable performances at the Commonwealth Games, although it fell short of the country’s previous records. Team Nigeria won 35 medals at the 2022 Birmingham Games, 24 medals at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, and 36 medals at the 2014 Glasgow edition.
