President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Police Academy campus in Ogun State, alongside a ₦15 billion take-off grant.
According to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the approval aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows for the expansion of the academy from its base in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country.
“The President’s approval is in furtherance of ongoing reforms to strengthen police training and expand access to quality security education nationwide”, the statement said.
The intervention fund will be drawn from the TETFund 2026 allocation and will be used to finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets.
A high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) recommended Erinja in Yewa South Local Government Area as the preferred site for the new campus.
According to the statement, “The choice of Erinja was based on student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force”.
The decision also considered the ongoing expansion of recruitment within the Nigeria Police Force and the need to enhance training capacity nationwide.
Tinubu said the expansion would strengthen police training, improve institutional governance, enhance modern policing education, and support national security objectives, noting that “a well-trained police force is central to effective national security and public safety”.
