The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Federal Ministry of Transportation have advanced plans to connect the Kano Railway Station and other railway operational facilities to the national grid as part of efforts to improve power reliability for rail services.
The development followed a strategic stakeholders’ engagement held on July 7, 2026, at the TCN Kano Regional Headquarters, where key players reviewed the proposed grid connection for railway infrastructure under the Federal Ministry of Transportation.
Discussions at the meeting centred on the technical requirements for the project, implementation timelines, operational coordination, system reliability and the responsibilities of participating agencies.
Stakeholders also examined measures to ensure compliance with national grid standards, network safety and seamless integration of the railway facilities into the transmission network.
Speaking at the meeting, the General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, underscored the importance of sustained collaboration among stakeholders, noting that early technical engagement would facilitate smooth project execution and ensure a stable electricity supply to the railway facilities.
According to him, reliable power is essential for efficient railway operations and will support the long-term sustainability of the country’s rail infrastructure.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the project in line with the Federal Government’s infrastructure development agenda, expressing confidence that the grid connection would enhance the operational efficiency of the railway system, improve service delivery in the transportation sector and strengthen critical national infrastructure through dependable electricity supply.
Representatives of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) Kano Region, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Team Nigeria, the project consultants, and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the project contractor, attended the meeting.
