Actress Shine Rosman has dismissed the widespread belief that Nigerian movie stars enjoy consistently luxurious lifestyles, describing it as one of the biggest misconceptions about Nollywood.
Speaking on a podcast hosted by her colleague Baaj Adebule, Rosman said the public often assumes actors are wealthy because of their on-screen appearances, when the reality is often very different.
She explained that while a few actors may appear financially comfortable, their income is usually not derived from acting alone but from additional business ventures.
According to her, many performers in the industry struggle financially due to inconsistent job opportunities and long gaps between acting roles.
Rosman said: “The most overrated misconception about Nollywood stars is that we have money. I don’t know why people assume we have money. Some of us do have money, but from other ventures. But many of us are struggling financially.”
Her comments highlight a growing concern within the industry about income instability, especially for mid-level and emerging actors who may go months without roles.
The pressure to maintain a glamorous image on social media, often to attract endorsement deals, further compounds financial challenges for many in the profession.
Industry observers note that while top-tier Nollywood stars have built significant wealth through endorsements, production deals, and business investments, reliance solely on acting fees remains unsustainable for most practitioners.
