The Taxman is coming for Landlords. Residential rental property owners will now face mandatory registration on a newly rolled-out tax portal if a proposal by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is adopted.
In the just-published Draft Income Tax, Residential Rental Income Tax Regulations of 2026, KRA is proposing that persons who are subject to rental income tax be required to register on an electronic platform known as the Electronic Rental Income Tax System (eRITS) as part of a strategy to seal leakages on residential rental income tax.
If adopted, this would mark a major shift from the present arrangement, where registration on eRITS is not mandatory, and residential rental property owners rely predominantly on self-declaration on iTax.
