A federal judge in New York City has ordered the release of a document said to be a suicide note written by Jeffrey Epstein, nearly seven years after his death in prison.
The handwritten note, which remains unverified, was unsealed on Wednesday by Judge Kenneth Karas.
The document was reportedly discovered after Epstein was found unconscious in his prison cell in July 2019, weeks before his death at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.
The note begins with a reference to a previous investigation into Epstein.
“They investigated me for months FOUND NOTHING!!!”
It later adopts a more reflective tone, stating:
“It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye.”
The final lines include the underlined phrases:
“NO FUN”
“NOT WORTH IT!!”
The authenticity of the note has not been independently confirmed. Prosecutors said the US Justice Department had not previously seen the document.
Epstein’s former cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, told reporters he found the note hidden inside a graphic novel shortly after Epstein was removed from the cell following what authorities described as an apparent suicide attempt.
Tartaglione, who has denied assaulting Epstein, said he later handed the note to his lawyers. Court records show the document became part of a legal dispute and remained sealed for years under attorney-client privilege protections.
Epstein was found dead on 10 August 2019. The New York medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, though the circumstances surrounding it have continued to fuel widespread speculation and conspiracy theories.
