Public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State are set to reopen after the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) suspended its month-long strike.
Oyo State NUT Secretary, Salami Olukayode, said the decision followed approval from the union’s national leadership after engagements with the state government over security concerns.
The strike began on June 1 after the abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area. The union said teachers could no longer work under conditions that exposed them to the risk of abduction without adequate security guarantees.
The suspension comes a week after the Oyo State Government appealed to the union to reopen schools, assuring teachers that efforts were underway to secure the release of the abducted victims and strengthen security across affected communities.
The government also approved ₦8.7 billion for the procurement of teaching and learning materials for public primary and junior secondary schools as part of efforts to improve the state’s education sector.
During the strike, NUT members in Oyo and other states staged protests, calling on the Federal and state governments to improve security in schools and secure the release of the abducted victims.
