The Nigerian Army has identified Shariff Umar, also known as Yusuf, as the primary coordinator of suicide bombing operations in the North-East. This revelation follows a series of intelligence-led cordon-and-search operations conducted in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on December 31, 2025, which resulted in the arrest of 14 suspects connected to suicide bombing activities.
Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, stated that investigations indicated Umar’s crucial role in recruiting and preparing suicide bombers, as well as directing them to their targets. Furthermore, he was implicated in the coordination of the supply of materials necessary for constructing improvised explosive devices.
During interrogation, a detained suspect, Ibrahim Muhammad, identified Umar as the leader of the bombing network. Umar is believed to have orchestrated the suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque on December 24, 2025, where an accomplice detonated an explosive vest. He was also linked to a thwarted suicide attack in Damaturu, which was successfully intercepted by security forces.

Investigations have uncovered connections between Umar and members of his household, including his wife, Yagana Modu, and stepdaughter, Amina. Amina reportedly acknowledged having seen the suspect bomber in their home.
Lieutenant Colonel Uba confirmed that all suspects remain in custody for further investigation, with efforts focused on dismantling the entire network and recovering any remaining explosives. He urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious individuals or activities to security agencies. Emphasizing the importance of community cooperation, Uba stated that such collaboration is essential in preventing future attacks and restoring peace to the region.
