On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), conducted courtesy visits to former Heads of State, General Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, as well as Governor Muhammed Umaru Bago of Niger State. In a statement issued on January 6, 2026, by Colonel Appolonia Anelle, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, General Shaibu highlighted the Nigerian Army’s ongoing initiatives aimed at bolstering training, doctrine, and operational readiness across all formations.
During his discussions with the former leaders and Governor Bago, he detailed various exercises currently being conducted across Army training institutions. These activities are designed to ensure personnel receive practical, mission-oriented training while evaluating the operational stance of combat units and identifying any necessary troop reinforcements or new formations.
Gen Shaibu emphasized the strategic significance of Niger State’s extensive landmass, stating, “We are consolidating all available resources and leveraging technology to effectively address security challenges. Niger State holds a special place in our history; I have previously served here as a Training and Doctrine Commander, and many of my colleagues share a profound connection with this state. It is, in many ways, regarded as home.”
He also mentioned his recent operational visits to the 31st, 11th, and 18th Brigades in Bida, aimed at assessing operational gaps and providing necessary resources to tackle the recent spike in insecurity in the state.
In their responses, both General Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar welcomed General Shaibu, commending his dedication, expertise, and visionary leadership.
