The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially received its new headquarters, constructed with support from the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
During the event, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, characterized the occasion as a historic milestone that transcends the mere commissioning of a building. She highlighted its pivotal role in fostering regional unity, cooperation, and sustainable development.
Since its inception in 1975, ECOWAS has transformed into one of Africa’s most influential regional organizations, playing key roles in peacekeeping, conflict prevention, democratic governance, and economic integration across West Africa.
The Minister emphasized that the new headquarters serves as a strategic asset that will bolster institutional capacity, enhance collaboration among member states, and empower the Commission to tackle emerging regional and global challenges. She anticipates that the facility will act as a nucleus for policy innovation, dialogue, and coordinated action.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast leadership and ongoing dedication to regional integration, noting that his vision for a stable and economically resilient West Africa continues to be a guiding force within the bloc.
She also extended her gratitude to President Xi Jinping and the Government of China, describing the initiative as a “remarkable gesture of goodwill.” This project, she said, stands as a testament to the strengthening relations between Africa and China, grounded in mutual respect and shared prosperity.
“The construction and delivery of this iconic edifice reflects China’s continued support for Africa’s development priorities and will stand as a lasting legacy for generations,” she said.
The Minister further called on ECOWAS member states to remain committed to the principles and protocols of the Community, stressing the importance of unity in addressing pressing regional challenges such as security threats, political transitions, and economic pressures.
“At a time like this, our unity is not optional; it is imperative. We must continue to act together and uphold the shared values that bind us,” she stated.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s role as host nation, she pledged the country’s continued support for initiatives that promote peace, stability, and economic growth across the region.
