Fresh attacks in Zamfara and Kaduna states have drawn renewed criticism from the Northern Elders Forum, which says the killings underscore the need for more decisive action to address Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
The forum’s reaction comes despite recent commendation from U.S. President Donald Trump, who praised President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in tackling terrorism and reaffirmed U.S. support for Nigeria’s fight against violent extremism.
NEF spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jiddere, said the attacks, which reportedly claimed at least 23 farmers in Zamfara and about 30 people in Kaduna, show that insecurity remains deeply rooted. He argued that the government has failed to act decisively and questioned claims that the security situation has improved.
Jiddere called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on security, saying perpetrators of repeated attacks are rarely apprehended.
While acknowledging efforts by northern governors to improve regional security and discussions on state policing, the forum insisted that primary responsibility for tackling insecurity rests with the Federal Government and urged stronger measures to protect lives and restore public confidence.
