Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi says he is adapting well to Vincenzo Italiano’s approach at Besiktas, revealing that the new coach allows players greater freedom beyond traditional positional duties.
Ndidi, who joined the Turkish club from Leicester City last year, became an important figure under former manager Sergen Yalcin, but Besiktas ended last season without silverware after finishing fourth in the league, leading to Yalcin’s departure.
Italiano was appointed last month, and Ndidi was among the early arrivals for pre-season preparations, featuring in the club’s first friendly match in Slovakia on July 5.
Speaking to beIN Sports Turkiye, the midfielder said Italiano encourages players to support both defensive and attacking phases rather than remain fixed to specific roles.
“In the game, it’s not just about being a number eight, because when we defend, I have to help in defence. When we attack, I also have to help the attack,” Ndidi said.
“He made us understand that we have the freedom to go into the box. It is going well. With time, as I said before, we are going to adapt. With time, we are going to understand more of what he wants, and what he wants is very clear.”
The 29-year-old remains the subject of transfer interest, with Premier League clubs Hull City and Manchester United, alongside Saudi Arabian teams, reportedly monitoring his situation.
Besiktas are believed to be open to his exit only if they receive a fee close to the €8 million they paid Leicester City for his services.
