Nigeria’s National Assembly has pledged continued support for President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to improve security and implement reforms aimed at strengthening the nation’s economy.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, made the pledge after leading principal officers of the Senate on a Sallah visit to President Tinubu at his Lagos residence.
Akpabio said the country’s security situation had improved compared to previous years, noting that large-scale insurgent activities and coordinated bomb attacks had significantly reduced. He, however, acknowledged that more work was needed to protect vulnerable communities and public spaces.
He revealed that the National Assembly is considering a framework for state police that would allow states to play a greater role in security while operating under national oversight.
The Senate President also urged Nigerians to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities within their communities.
On the economy, Akpabio praised Tinubu’s reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates, saying they had helped reposition the country for growth.
He highlighted major infrastructure projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Lagos-Badagry-Sokoto road corridor as key drivers of economic development.
Akpabio reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting policies that promote national development and disclosed that lawmakers are considering increased funding for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund.
He added that the Senate delegation also prayed for peace, stability and the safe release of Nigerians still in captivity.
