The newly approved salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, due to take effect on September 1, 2026, has been described by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Ahmad Lawan, as a major boost to military welfare.
Lawan said the upward review, which ranges from 30 to 80 per cent across all ranks, reflects the government’s recognition of the sacrifices of military personnel and its commitment to strengthening the fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.
The former Senate President noted that increasing the annual personnel wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion is not just a financial adjustment but a strategic investment aimed at improving troop morale, professionalism and operational effectiveness.
He also stressed the need for stronger joint operations, improved intelligence sharing and closer cooperation among the Armed Forces and other security agencies to tackle the evolving nature of modern warfare.
Lawan reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting policies and funding that enhance military welfare, strengthen defence capabilities and provide the Armed Forces with the resources needed to protect the country.
