Former Germany international Per Mertesacker has been named the new Managing Director for Sport at the German Football Association (DFB).
The 41-year-old will replace Andreas Rettig, with his contract set to run through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup. He is scheduled to assume the position on January 1, 2027.
Mertesacker takes up the role just months after departing Arsenal, where he served as academy manager.
In his new position, he will oversee the German national teams and the country’s football development programme.
His appointment comes shortly after the German FA confirmed former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as the country’s new head coach.
