Safety concerns have prompted the Lagos State Government to commence the demolition of a fire-ravaged building on Martins Street, Lagos Island.
The exercise, being carried out by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, follows a comprehensive structural assessment that declared the building unsafe.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the demolition would be conducted in line with safety standards for urban disaster management and public health protection.
He advised traders, residents, customers and members of the public to comply with safety directives throughout the exercise.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the building and its immediate surroundings have been designated a restricted and hazardous area, warning unauthorised persons to stay away.
He added that trading, parking, loading and other commercial activities around the site had been suspended until the area is certified safe by relevant authorities.
The LASEMA permanent secretary said the site had been barricaded, with security personnel deployed to control access and ensure public safety.
He added that emergency responders would remain on standby throughout the operation, while the demolition team works with relevant agencies to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
