Manchester City have reportedly selected their preferred option to fill the midfield role should Rodri leave the club this summer.
The Spain international has been linked with a transfer to Barcelona, with reports claiming he has already reached an agreement on personal terms with the Catalan giants.
According to TyCSports, City have started planning for life after Rodri, with manager Enzo Maresca identifying Fernandez as his top choice to replace the World Cup winner.
The report stated that Maresca sees the Argentina midfielder as a player capable of taking control of the midfield, having previously worked with him at Chelsea before leaving the Premier League club.
However, it remains uncertain whether Fernandez will make a move to Maresca’s team, as he has also been linked with Spanish giants Real Madrid.
