Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured residents that the pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area will be rescued safely, insisting that the state will not experience a Chibok-like tragedy.
Makinde gave the assurance on Monday while addressing protesters led by social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, who gathered at his private residence in Ikolaba, Ibadan, to demand urgent action over the abduction.
The governor said his administration is committed to securing the release of the victims, noting that all available options are being explored to ensure their safe return.
He described the situation as delicate and unprecedented, stressing that caution is necessary because the victims are children.
Makinde said there is no information suggesting that any of the abducted pupils or teachers have been killed, assuring residents that government is engaging all relevant stakeholders to secure their freedom.
He expressed support for peaceful protests and acknowledged public concerns over the prolonged captivity of the victims.
Responding to calls for direct participation in the rescue effort, Makinde said he has confidence in the current security architecture, adding that it is capable of achieving a safe rescue with minimal casualties.
He, however, stressed that if necessary, he would personally volunteer for the mission despite the risks involved.
Makinde also noted that state governments do not have direct control over federal security agencies, but said his administration continues to collaborate with them while strengthening local security through the Amotekun Corps.
He added that lessons from the incident would be used to improve security measures and prevent future occurrences.
Leader of the protest, VeryDarkMan, said the demonstration was aimed at demanding accountability and urgent action from the government to rescue the abducted pupils and teachers.
