In a groundbreaking counterterrorism operation, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in collaboration with United States forces, have successfully neutralized Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, a notorious senior leader of ISIS.
This meticulously planned operation represents a major stride in efforts to combat terrorism in Nigeria and the broader West African region.
The operation, which took place earlier this week, was the culmination of a strengthened partnership between Nigerian and U.S. forces, highlighting the effectiveness of intelligence sharing and coordinated military actions.
The successful elimination of al-Minuki disrupts a violent terrorist network that has posed significant risks to both national and regional security.
Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was identified as a critical figure in ISIS operations, providing strategic guidance on media, economic warfare, and the development of weaponry, including explosives and drones. His death is expected to hinder ISIS’s ability to coordinate and direct operations globally, particularly in Africa.
Recent intelligence suggests that al-Minuki had been elevated to the position of Head of the General Directorate of States as of February 2026, making him the second most senior leader within ISIS’s global hierarchy.
Previously, he held the title of Emir of the al-Furqan GDP Office, overseeing operations linked to ISIS across the Sahel and West Africa, particularly targeting ethnic and religious minority communities.
Al-Minuki’s connections with ISIS-West Africa included involvement in the infamous 2018 Dapchi kidnapping, where over 100 schoolgirls were abducted. His extensive operational ties and history with Boko Haram further underscore the threat he posed to regional stability.
In a statement, Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, emphasized the significance of this operation:
“This successful mission showcases Nigeria’s commitment to confronting terrorism and highlights the importance of our collaboration with U.S. forces in defeating transnational terrorist networks.”
The Defence Headquarters praised the gallantry and professionalism of all personnel involved in the operation and acknowledged the continued support of U.S. forces.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain dedicated to ongoing efforts aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructures, protecting civilians, and fostering peace and stability throughout the nation and the wider region.
As Nigeria continues to face challenges from extremist groups, this operation serves as a strong reminder of the resilience and resolve of the nation’s military in the fight against terrorism..
