LaLiga president Javier Tebas has called on FIFA president Gianni Infantino to step down following the collapse of the governing body’s proposal to sell a stake in the FIFA World Cup to private investors.
In a post on X over the weekend, Tebas said, “INFANTINO MUST NOT CONTINUE.
“That FIFA has withdrawn its proposal to privatise its competitions is good news. But it would be a grave mistake to think that this has resolved the governance problem.
“The confederations, associations, leagues, players… should not settle for this withdrawal and consider the matter closed. The issue is much deeper,” he said.
Infantino confirmed on Saturday that FIFA had abandoned plans to allow private investors to acquire stakes in a new company overseeing the organisation’s commercial rights and tournament operations.
The proposal was dropped after strong opposition from football stakeholders, including UEFA’s threat to boycott FIFA competitions, while resistance from other continental confederations denied the plan the support needed to proceed.
