The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has nominated Court of Appeal judge Mohamed Warsame for appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya, following the conclusion of public interviews held in Nairobi.
The commission on Wednesday night said the nomination followed a competitive vetting process that assessed candidates on integrity, professional competence and constitutional vision.
The nomination now sets in motion the final stages of the appointment process, where President William Ruto is expected to formally appoint Justice Warsame, subject to approval by the National Assembly. If approved, he will join the apex court bench as the 14th judge of the apex court, tasked with determining constitutional disputes and presidential election petitions.
While making the announcement, Chief Justice Martha Koome said the selection process followed a broad stakeholder engagement that brought together voices from across society.
“We engaged different organizations before the hiring process. Every step in the process was undertaken in strict compliance with the constitution, Judicial Act and guided by constitutional imperatives,” said the chief justice.
Justice Warsame’s nomination comes as the Judiciary moves to fill the vacancy left by Justice Mohamed Ibrahim, who died in December 2025. The appointment is expected to restore the court to its full bench of seven judges at a critical time ahead of the 2027 General Election.
