Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has identified Portugal as the team with the strongest midfield heading into the World Cup.
Speaking on The Dressing Room Podcast, Cole also expressed doubts about Spain’s prospects at the tournament, predicting an early exit for the European side.
“I’m going to throw it out there, I think this Spain team will limp out. I think they will limp out,” The Dressing Room Podcast.
“For instance, if Lamine Yamal doesn’t play, say he gets injured or something, I just don’t fancy them.
“I think Portugal has got a chance.
“My thinking is… Vitinha, Nuno Mendes at left-back, obviously Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Neves, so the midfield is solid, I think the midfield is the best in the tournament.”
Cole believes Portugal’s blend of experience and quality in midfield could make them serious contenders at the World Cup.
