The Island Titans Cricket Club secured the opening trophy of the current Club Cricket Committee campaign, capturing the 40-over title this past Sunday at the University of Lagos Cricket Oval. After winning the toss and opting to set a target, the Titans delivered a commanding performance to overcome Ibeju Lekki Cricket Club by a significant margin of 67 runs.
The eventual champions faced early turbulence in their innings, as the top order—comprising Rahmon Ali, Dhilesh, and Daniel Ayodele—found it difficult to establish a lasting rhythm or meaningful stands. The momentum shifted, however, thanks to a disciplined knock from Amit Singh, who anchored the side with a team-high 48 runs from 55 deliveries. Singh found a reliable partner in Yellow Greens veteran Isaac Okpe, whose unbeaten 46 off 65 balls featured a display of power hitting including four boundaries and two maximums.
This middle-order resurgence was bolstered by a 23-run contribution from former national team captain Ademola Onikoyi, allowing the Titans to reach a collective total of 164 before being dismissed in the 33rd over.
The run chase for Ibeju Lekki proved to be a disjointed affair, as the Titans’ bowling attack maintained constant pressure and dismantled any burgeoning partnerships. While former Junior Yellow Greens skipper Kareem Gafar offered some resistance with an aggressive 29 off 30 balls, his teammates struggled to find their footing. Ibeju Lekki was ultimately bundled out for 97 runs in just 23 overs, handing the Titans a comfortable victory.
This championship marks a successful debut for the 40-over format, which was integrated into the league structure alongside the traditional T20 tournament at the beginning of the season. The CCC Lagos has seen remarkable growth since its inception in 1987 as a modest four-club contest; it has now evolved into a robust 22-team organization spanning two distinct divisions.
The local cricket community now turns its attention to the final stages of the 20-over competition, with the concluding round of the Super Six matches scheduled to take place on April 18 and 19.
