Tension remained high in the Ojoo area of Ibadan, Oyo State, after a violent clash erupted following the alleged killing of a tricycle rider, with gunshots reported and property damaged as security agencies moved to contain the unrest.
ARISE News gathered that the violence began after a disagreement allegedly resulted in the fatal stabbing of the tricycle rider, triggering a wave of retaliatory attacks that heightened fears among residents and forced businesses to shut their doors.
According to residents and eyewitnesses, the victim was allegedly chased and stabbed to death by suspected Hausa scrap collectors following an argument on the previous night.
The killing sparked outrage among some Yoruba youths, who reportedly launched retaliatory attacks while demanding justice for the deceased. The unrest subsequently escalated into gunfire and the destruction of property, further raising tensions across the community.
Security operatives were later deployed to the area to restore order and prevent the violence from spreading. Armed personnel maintained a visible presence as authorities worked to stabilise the situation.
Shops remained closed while many residents stayed indoors amid concerns over possible renewed violence. Authorities continued efforts to de-escalate tensions, although no official statement had yet been issued on the incident at the time of filing this report.
