Nottingham Forest fullback Ola Aina has opened up about the motivations that led him to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria, despite a deep-rooted history within the English national team setup. Born in Southwark nearly three decades ago to Nigerian parents, the 29-year-old’s early trajectory suggested a long-term future with the Three Lions. Aina was a mainstay in England’s developmental ranks, featuring prominently for the Young Lions across the U16 through U20 levels, and was eventually integrated into the U21 squad in 2015.
The turning point in his international career arrived in March 2017. While yet to make his competitive bow for England’s U21s, the former Chelsea academy graduate accepted an offer to participate in a training camp with the Super Eagles in London. This initial exposure to the Nigerian squad proved decisive, as Aina felt a profound connection to the group. Because he had represented England in official youth competitions, the transition required a formal change of sporting nationality sanctioned by FIFA. Following the administrative clearance, he earned his first senior cap for the three-time African champions during a pivotal World Cup qualification fixture against Zambia in October 2017.
Discussing the shift, Aina emphasized that his decision was primarily anchored in his ancestral roots and a desire to honor his family’s background. Despite accumulating more than 20 appearances for England’s youth sides, the lure of his heritage proved more compelling than continuing on the English pathway.
“Born and raised in London, I chose to play for Nigeria. It was simply a decision I made when I was around 20. That’s where my parents are from; that’s my heritage,” Aina explained during a feature on Nottingham Forest’s official YouTube channel. “The opportunity presented itself, and I believed it was the right one at that moment, so I embraced it wholeheartedly, and here I am today.”
The versatile defender also touched upon the emotional impact his choice has had on his relatives, noting that seeing him in the Nigerian colors brings immense joy to his household.
“My family is extremely proud of me, particularly when I wear the Super Eagles shirt. They cherish it even more than I do. For me, it’s a privilege; it’s an honor. It’s truly remarkable to play for them,” he added.
Aina’s commitment to the Nigerian cause has yielded significant professional success. He was a cornerstone of the defensive unit that propelled the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His individual contributions during that campaign did not go unnoticed, as his consistently high level of play earned him a prestigious selection in the tournament’s official Best XI.
