Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will retail for £69.99 in the United Kingdom, while a premium edition will cost £89.99, as the gaming giant revealed fresh details ahead of the highly anticipated title’s release.
The announcement came as pre-orders for GTA 6 opened worldwide, with the standard edition priced at $79.99 in the United States and the Ultimate Edition set at $100.
In a move that has sparked debate among fans, Rockstar disclosed that physical copies of the game will no longer include a disc. Instead, purchasers will receive a download code packaged inside the game box, allowing them to install the title digitally.
The decision has raised questions among gamers about ownership, resale rights and the future of physical game collections.
While some fans welcomed the pricing, others questioned the value of purchasing a boxed edition without a physical disc.
Industry observers say the move reflects a broader shift within the gaming sector toward digital distribution.
Freelance video games journalist Vic Hood described the £69.99 price tag as “fairly reasonable” for a blockbuster title of GTA 6’s scale but acknowledged that the absence of a disc could disappoint collectors.
“The lack of a disc may irk some physical collectors,” Hood said.
She added, however, that the approach could benefit Rockstar by reducing resale activity and limiting the risk of leaks ahead of launch.
“From Rockstar’s point of view, it reduces the amount of rebuying and reselling and helps prevent leaks,” she noted.
The game is scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles.
Players who pre-order digital versions will be able to begin pre-loading the game from November 12, while physical editions will also be available from the same date to facilitate installation before launch day.
The Ultimate Edition will offer additional in-game content, including exclusive vehicles, weapons and character outfits.
The latest announcement marks another milestone in the long development journey of GTA 6, one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history.
Rockstar first confirmed work on the game in February 2022, nearly a decade after the release of GTA 5, which has sold close to 230 million copies worldwide and generated billions of dollars in revenue.
The upcoming title will introduce Lucia, the franchise’s first playable female protagonist in a modern 3D setting, alongside her criminal partner Jason.
Analysts believe GTA 6 could become one of the most expensive games ever produced and may influence pricing across the wider industry.
Hood suggested that if players accept the new pricing model, other major studios could follow Rockstar’s lead.
“The price of game production has been increasing and if GTA 6 can lead the charge for a price increase that is palatable for players, it’s likely other studios will follow suit,” she said.
