Democracy and Good Governance Watch Initiative says President’s reported intervention demonstrates commitment to the rule of law and a credible electoral process ahead of the Osun governorship election…..
The Democracy and Good Governance Watch Initiative (DGGWI) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over reports that he directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to initiate legal steps to vacate a court order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government.
In a statement jointly signed by Michael Popoola Ajayi, Nelson Ekujumi and Gbenga Soloki, the group described the reported directive as a demonstration of statesmanship and a strong commitment to democratic governance, the rule of law and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
According to the organisation, the President’s intervention, coming as Osun State prepares for its governorship election, reflects a determination to place national interest above partisan considerations.
The group argued that the move would strengthen public confidence in the neutrality of the Federal Government and reassure Nigerians that the outcome of the forthcoming governorship election should be decided solely by the electorate.
DGGWI also welcomed what it described as the President’s position that anti-corruption agencies should continue to perform their statutory responsibilities independently and professionally, without political interference.
The organisation maintained that while agencies such as the EFCC must continue to discharge their constitutional mandates, they should also consider the wider public interest and avoid actions capable of creating unnecessary political tension or diminishing confidence in the democratic process.
It further commended the EFCC for its anti-corruption efforts and urged the Commission to continue carrying out its responsibilities with fairness, transparency and professionalism.
According to the group, strong democratic institutions and credible elections remain essential to Nigeria’s democratic development, calling on all stakeholders to uphold those values.
The organisation also appealed to political parties, candidates, security agencies, electoral officials and residents of Osun State to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly before, during and after the governorship election.
DGGWI concluded that the reported intervention by President Tinubu reinforces its belief that constitutionalism, democracy and the rule of law remain central to the administration’s approach to governance.
