Former Chelsea F.C. defender Glen Johnson has called on the Blues to move for Julián Álvarez, who is also attracting interest from Arsenal.
Johnson believes the Atlético Madrid forward would be an ideal fit for Chelsea under Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge. Álvarez has also been linked with a potential summer switch to Arsenal and Barcelona, although Atlético are reportedly unwilling to sell to the Catalan club.
Johnson stressed that attacking reinforcements should be Chelsea’s main focus ahead of the new season.
“Signing a striker should be priority number one for Chelsea this summer,” Johnson told Football London.
He added that a consistent goalscorer is essential for top-level competition in the Premier League.
“You can’t compete at the top of the Premier League without an out-and-out striker scoring 20 goals a season, and Chelsea don’t have someone of that description at the moment.
“I think Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid would be perfect. He seems like he’s on the move this summer, and that’s exactly the type of player Chelsea needs to go out and snap up.”
